Fall Prevention Tips for Older Adults
By Mindful Mobility | Expert In-Home Training Stay Steady, Stay Safe, Stay Independent
Move Every Day
Gentle exercise like walking, stretching, or balance training keeps your muscles flexible & strong.
Try standing on one foot while holding to the counter for support.
Work on a SLOW, alternating march with a focus on upright posture-hold the counter for safety.
Make Your Home Safer
Remove clutter and scatter rugs.
Keep pathways clear and well-lit…NIGHTLIGHTS!
Install grab bars in bathrooms.
Consider “life alert” if you live alone.
Choose the Right Footwear
Wear supportive shoes with non-slip soles. Do not walk in socks alone.
Avoid shoes and slippers without backs, heels, shoes that are too loose, and sandals.
Check Vision & Hearing
Schedule regular eye and ear exams.
Keep glasses and hearing aids clean and up to date.
Review Medications
Ask your doctor or pharmacist if any medications cause dizziness or drowsiness.
It is important to review medications with your doctor at each visit, and as needed. Specifically if you have noticed any changes in your balance, feeling lightheaded or dizzy, or any other concerns. Even if you have been taking a medication for a long time, it is an important conversation!
Use Support if Needed
Canes, walkers, or railings are tools for independence—not weakness.
